Solar panels generate electricity due to photoelectric effect. The most widely used compound used for the cells is silicon but it’s very costly and if you have to build solar panels at home then you have to look for some other compound or metal which will be cheap for you. Good news is that you can now afford a semi conducting device or metal oxide for your panel now. Thanks to availability of cupric oxide. When the photons strike the electron of this metal compound, they move into their excitation state and constitute current.

Its not difficult task to do but a very good cause that will help you in saving your money from paying heavy electricity bills. Moreover, it’s a good contribution toward saving your environment and conserving energy. Tons and tons of energy from the sun in the form of sun rays get wasted daily because of not proper utilization. If you still have doubts, what practice you may have to do? Or how qualified you must be to make it? Then relax and you just need to know some basic information regarding the tools and wiring.

So if you have now finally decided to go for it and build solar panels at home then you will need some important materials regarding the module. Like a copper sheet of some rectangular size, a burner, some shear tool, cleansing agent, sandpaper, ammeter, water, some salt and a bottle or container with a big round neck.

Procedure is simple enough to understand and a 5th grader can also attempt and succeed well. Take a copper sheet and cut it in a square shape and of the size of burner top you have. Now look for any oils or greases on the sheet. If any, just take any cleansing agent and clean it off. When the sheet will be clean enough to work on, then rub it with a sand paper to attain smoothness and get rid of any bits on its surface. Finally put it on the flame ant wait until it turns red hot. When the colour change is observed, just take it off from the flame and let it cool down. Further after its cooling, pour a viscous cupric oxide on its surface and form a layer. Put it back on the flame and let the two react and join. After you observe the layer formation, take the sheet to some water and scrub and be gentle to do that. Finally take another sheet of copper of the same size and bend both to fit in a container available to you. just care about the touch between edges of the two sheets. Take some clips and wires to connect the plates formed with a micro ammeter. This will detect current if generated. For the concentration in between the plates, take some water and form a solution of it with salt. You are done with the first cell.

This will be as a primary task for you and you can then form as many as cells you wish to. This is the easiest and cheapest way to build solar panels at home. And you can check its effectiveness when connected to any device or appliance.
