You can use LED Christmas lights instead of the conventional variety to make your holiday season a little greener. You can easily find LED Christmas lights, since most stores that sell Christmas lights stock their shelves with both varieties. Yes, Virginia. You can have a greener Christmas!

In addition to consuming less energy than traditional lights, LED Christmas lights last up to ten times longer. They use 75% less energy. As such, you can reap savings on your electric bill this holiday season if you use this type of lighting.

LED Christmas lights are available in various sizes and shapes, like “mini” and “globe” — just like traditional string lights. Additionally, both net and icicle forms are on the market. Whatever color you’re looking for, you should be able to find it.

The LED type of Christmas lights are safer when compared to conventional lights. You don’t, for instance, have to worry about overheating even if you connect together several strands. But you should still check the box or manual to find out the recommended number of strings that can be safely connected.

If you want to be really energy conscious, choose LED Christmas lights that are solar powered. These lights are more energy friendly because they harness the energy of the sun. Some models automatically light up at night. A 50-light string might cost around $17 on Amazon. As such, you’ll save both money and energy by purchasing these LED light strands.

Occasionally people are put off by LED Christmas lights’ initial cost. And it is, of course, true that this variety costs more than conventional incandescent bulbs. That said, greener and more efficient lighting solutions easily offset the higher initial costs in the long run.

If you don’t want to purchase LED Christmas lights because you still have working incandescent strands, you can get Christmas light timers to use with your existing lights. Timers regulate your lights’ energy usage. Not only that, they can also make your house more burglar-proof by giving the appearance that someone is at home (turning the lights on and off) when you’re actually away for the holidays.

Regardless of whether you use incandescent or LED Christmas lights, you should observe safety protocols. For instance, by making sure you don’t pull on the cord when you unplug the lights, you can prevent tearing of the wiring inside. When preparing to store light strands until the next holiday season, ensure there are no non-working bulbs or other kinds of damage before storing strings of lights. Don’t use lights that have loose connections, broken sockets, or bare wires. Store Christmas Lights, and any electrical decorations, in a dry place where they can’t be damaged by water. Keep them out of children’s reach during storage, to ensure the wires are not damaged.

Christmas is a time in which we can make our planet and our future greener as we also celebrate our family and religion in this season of giving. Lots of little steps can go a long way, so don’t forget that every little bit counts.
